Thanks to provincial tax credits, BC residents pay only a small portion of their total donation -- for example, $100 costs you just $25! See the chart below for details (chart from www.BCGreens.ca).
Notes:
• The candidate can only issue tax-credit receipts for contributions made after April 14th.
• Residents from provinces other than British Columbia can make contributions, but cannot receive the BC tax credit.
• There is no limit on campaign contributions.
• Americans and anyone in the world can donate legally to the campaign. British Columbia law allows unlimited contributions from anywhere on the planet!
(Please see the Election Act's political contribution rules below.)
Political contributions
The Election Act does not limit the amount of money, property or services that an individual or organization can contribute. However, registered political parties, registered constituency associations, candidates and leadership contestants must record all of the contributions they receive. They must identify the contributors of over $250 in a single year, election campaign or leadership contest on their financing reports.
Contributions can be made anonymously. Anonymous contributions must be less than $50, and can only be made at functions held by or on behalf of the organization or individual to whom the contribution is given.
Registered political parties and registered constituency associations cannot accept more than $10,000 in anonymous contributions in a year. Candidates, leadership contestants and nomination contestants cannot accept more than $3,000 in anonymous contributions for one election or contest.
Registered political parties and registered constituency associations can issue income tax receipts for contributions of money received at any time, but not for contributions of goods or services. Candidates can only issue income tax receipts for contributions of money received after they have received their certificate of candidacy and before the return of the writ.
